Hello Richard,
On the subject of taxes I can tell you that in San Diego County if you are in the county for more than 6 months they want property taxes. Approximately 1.15 % of appraised value. I understand from family, that in New England, if you are in a harbor for a season the authorities will come looking for you too.  Here in California I have been told that not all counties pursue the property tax issue. As far as the Pacific NW, the cruising is exceptional. I use to do some commercial fishing in Alaska. In late May we would move the boat from Anacortes Washington to Sitka Alaska. The inside passage I found was wonderful. There are remote stretches where you need to be self-sufficient. In the PNW you are fairly far North. By early May to mid September the sun is up early and in mid season it is up very early until very late. You are correct that the West Coast is not like the East Coast. There are stretches where weather permitting you will want to go to make miles. I will probably get in trouble with my next statement, but. As far as coming from Panama back to the US I would bypass Mexico if possible. I know people who have had problems with criminals and the police and they still go back. I know other people who won't go back to Mexico. As far as border crossings, it is manageable. 2 years ago in the RV I had an issue coming back into the US.  They took exception to the Admirals Orchid plant that we took North with us. they confiscated it. I have found that with immigration & customs that if you are pleasant and try to comply with the rules it will work out. They are good at spotting innocent mistakes from people who are trying to cheat.  On a more positive note I will add that San Diego is a nice city and the weather is very nild. It is a true Mediterranean climate. It is a nice place to spend the winter. Also, whatever marine services you could possibly need they can do here. Should you have more specific questions please feel free to reach out to me.

Joseph,

We are from Laguna Beach, so I am very familiar with So CA. We bought the boat in Virginia and have been pleasantly surprised with cruising on the East Coast. We're currently in the Bahamas, and I'm convinced I could read a newspaper on the bottom through 10 feet of gin clear water. The sharks, turtles, rays are spectacular! We're in the water daily.

I'm with you about Mexico. It would be nice to stop along the way, but I don't think I will spend a lot of time there. Also I'm not looking forward to the Baja Bash. Maybe we spend the winter months in Cali. We have family and friends there, and it's not too far from the PNW. Most likely we'll find a good weather window and make the run nonstop or maybe one.

BTW, we're going to Guatemala to get our boat painted. We're going with Stars & Stripes Blue. Whenever I do a search on "boats painted stars & stripes blue" your boat appears. Is that your color? And how do you like it? They say there are only 2 boat colors...white and stupid 😆

Hello Richard,.
I like the blue color. It seemed a little odd at first but it has grown on me. People ask about it. In a good way. I am familiar with the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Yes the water is gin clear. As far as taking the boat from SoCAl to the PNW There are different ideas I can share with you if you wish. I hope to make the trip next year. As they say around here, going NW is going uphill. A series of shorter hops is usually what people do. There is a group of trawlers that go to Cabo each year from San Diego. They have to come back, so I'm guessing they have it figured out. My topsides could use a paint job but Guatemala is a little too far for me. I might just have to bite the bullet and do it here. Let me know if I can be of any assistance.
Best wishes

Pass Mexico!  No way....

Please, let's put this in perspective.  To say Mexico is a pass is like saying Canada or the Caribbean is a pass.  Like the other examples,  Mexico is a large country with more than five thousand miles of coastline.  Certainly there are areas to avoid or pass, but to pass by Mexico is a mistake.

I have been cruising the west coast of Mexico and the Baja Penninsula for 20 years.  I have never experianced any situations of concern or theft.  Sadly,  I will be moving my boat north this June to California.  I will miss the warm clear water, the kind people, adventure,  sea life, quiet anchorages, good food and the hundreds of incredible vistas I've witnessed.

FYI - We just posted 2 pdf slide presentations in our documents library on the website (click expand and then look in the “Rendezvous Presentations” folder) that were presented at our West Coast rendezvous this year:

-2026 West Coast Rendezvous - John Rains' Panama Presentation

-2026 West Coast Rendezvous - Cruising Mexico

Their presentation (speaking) at our event wasn’t very well organized, and they ran out of time and never really got to the Panama part, but their slide show is definitely worth a look if you’re cruising that way. They’ve also written a book on cruising in Mexico.

If anyone has anything like this to add to our documents library, send it my way and I will post it. [please respect copyrights, or request permission from the author]

I can’t speak to cruising Mexico or coming up the Pacific coast to WA. However, cruising in our Salish Sea north to Alaska is amazing, plenty of islands and anchorages to explore and some you will have to yourself, lots of wildlife – bears, whales, dolphins, otters, birds, etc. - spectacular scenery, snow peaked mountains, glaciers, waterfalls... It can take years to truly explore it all. It’s not always cold – we’ve been in Juneau in 95º weather, and swam in 75–80-degree water at the end of a fjord, and in Desolation Sound, as well as hiking to lakes to swim. We do cruise all year long in Puget Sound. We’ve cruised to Port Townsend or Victoria for New Years, and know people who spent Thanksgiving in Princess Louisa cove in BC.

Selene Team:

I've transited the west coast a half dozen times in both trawlers and sailboats (three times in a Selene). Happy to share specifics if anybody is interested.
