generator air filter

I recently bought 2008 Annie 5376, I have been going through everything to get a new base line.

When I went to inspect the 12 KW Generater and removered the air cleaner,

I believe it has never been cleaned after 777 hours. As I remove the filter, it literly fell apart into small pieces. See Picture.

This is an Item I feel is over looked. But I feel left alone it would have been sucked into the motor eventually.

Hi Jerry,

Congrats on the new to you Selene.

Um, yeah thats not a good lookin’ air filter.  Almost looks like a some sort of pre-filter.  Mine is much denser foam.  Hopefully it disintegrated once you got it out.  Not a diesel mechanic by any means but I wonder if any particulate would just be blown through the combustion cycle and ejected with exhaust?

Glad you caught it and good on you for setting a baseline.  Really helps to know when things get squirrelly.

Enjoy your wonderful boat.

Jerry’s is how mine looked when I replaced it last November. Washington a bit challenging to source a new one but I eventually did plus a spare

Where in Washington?

I'm guessing that Corey was typing, "'Was' a bit challenging...", but was overcome by the auto-correct gods. I've found Bay Shore Marine in Annapolis very helpful in sourcing parts for my Northern Lights generators (both 12KW and 6KW). I've never asked for an air filter, but after this thread, I believe that'll be in my near future (once I'm back at my home port).

Ha - yes. Guess my iPhone thinks i type Washington a lot so auto-corrected me. Ironically, as a “local” I usually type DC.

Corey - I was waiting for your reply as I know that you and Tracy are actually aboard leizu in Washington, D.C. docked at the Capital Yacht Club. I don’t expect you have traveled much lately, as the ice downriver where we are on the Potomac has just recently thawed and last I heard folks were walking on (frozen) water around your boat. Not a bad time to be in the engine room doing maintenance and such I bet.

Stay warm brother - Jack
