Gas struts
Gary Rogowski
We have a 53ft 2008, the gas struts on the lazerette hatch have stopped working. Where can we get replacement struts? There are no part numbers or other markings indicating a part number or manufacturer on the current struts. It has a 200N on one of the labels, i assume that means 200 newton force to hold the hatch open.. any leads on where to find marine grade replacements is appreciated.

Hi Gary:

They aren't exact replacements, but I've used stainless steel cylinders from this company with good success: https://www.maxumhardware.com/catalog/

They offer a variety of end fittings on the cylinders and if you get the "blade" end that has a hole in it, you'll need to slightly over-drill their hole to get it to fit, but otherwise, they seem to work well and are good quality.

Somewhere in the old forum threads are where myself and others sourced those. I replaced mine about 4 yrs ago

Does anyone know how many pounds force you need on the lazarette gas struts? I have 2 struts on my 57. I'm estimating about 15 lbs on each strut. Does that sound about right?

This information should be readily available from Jet Tern Marine, surely they have information to help people with Selenes

Richard:

No.....the struts will need to be considerably stronger than 15 lbs each. Remember that they operate at a severe mechanical dis-advantage for about the first 2/3 of their stroke. Two 15 lb cylinders *might* hold the hatch open, but they won't do much to help you lift it in the first place. You can measure the weight of opening the hatch with a fish scale, but then you have to do some math because the hatch attachment point is usually only about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way from the end to the hinges so you'll have to compensate for the mechanical disadvantage they have in lifting/holding the hatch open.

Yes, Jet Tern can probably tell you. You might ask Dylan.....though he's crazy busy these days.
