Summer of '26 Gathering on the Saint Mary's (MD) & Yeocomico (VA)

Jack Burgess | Published on 4/2/2026

The Summer of ‘26 event has been scheduled for July 17th to 19th. Jack Burgess is once again inviting all cruisers (yes, even non-Seleners) to gather at Horseshoe Bend on The Saint Mary’s River in MD on or before Friday, July 17 to stay at Olverson’s Marina on The Yeocomico River in VA until Sunday, July 19 or later. Events are planned with Saint Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM), the Chesapeake Orchestra, and Olverson’s Lodge Creek Marina.

The format will be similar to last year’s successful and low key gathering, with the following schedule
:

Thursday, July 16 - Early arrivals anchor at Horseshoe Bend on the Saint Mary’s River in Maryland at SMCM. The anchorage is expansive with excellent holding and comfortable depths (15’-20’). We are welcome to use the docks at SMCM for our tenders (not our big boats) during our stay. No fuel or marine services are available, but the same are available Saturday at the marina we will use in VA. SMCM has beautiful grounds for walking, bike riding and touring. Historic Saint Mary’s City, Maryland’s first colonial capital, is now a state run outdoor museum and archaeological park. The Maryland Dove, a replica of the ship that brought the first settlers, is docked on the river and can be boarded and toured. Dinner at SMCM dining hall or on board or picnic as you please.

Friday, July 17- A day of relaxation, visiting with friends, touring the grounds of SMCM and Historic Saint Mary’s City. Late arrivals in the anchorage in time to take our tenders to the SMCM docks and visit the Townhouse Green to enjoy world class music performed by The Chesapeake Orchestra, led by our friend Jeffrey Silberschlag, which begins at 7:00 PM. Picnic on the Green with what you bring or buy from the many local vendors. BYOB is OK. We will have an area reserved for our group courtesy of SMCM. No dogs permitted on the Green during the concert. The concert is free. I will be requesting all to pitch in and help us make a generous contribution to The Chesapeake Orchestra and the SMCM River Concert Series to show our appreciation and support. After the concert, back on board our boats for a good night’s sleep.

Saturday, July 18 - The Selene Armada raises anchors and travels approximately 15 NM to Olverson’s Lodge Creek Marina on the Yeocomico River in VA. I have already reserved every available transient slip for our group and we will be provided a group discount. Adequate protected anchorage is available for those who prefer to anchor out and take tenders 100 yards or so to the docks. Depending on the number of Selenes participating, some vessels may need to anchor out, but the anchorage is beautiful and protected. Afternoon pool party. Evening pot luck dinner with grills, kitchen facilities, bathrooms and covered dining area provided. Evening entertainment will be provided and we can likely book the same Irish group who entertained us last year if that is the consensus.

Sunday, July 19 - Casual group breakfast, eat on board, sleep in, go running, walking, biking, maybe Bloody Marys or Mimosas - pick your poison. Afternoon pool party, fun and games again. Dinner again under cover at the dining area.

Monday, July 20 - As you please. The area is wonderful for touring and there is a lot to do. Cars can be arranged. Our home is a tender or CC ride away (5 NM), conditions permitting. My friend Steve at Olverson’s will extend transient slip rates at our reduced price (TBD) if requested.

Terry and I have been visiting, enjoying and supporting SMCM and The Chesapeake Orchestra for more than 20 years. Our middle daughter Katherine attended SMCM in the early 2000’s and that launched our relationship with these fine institutions. We are so happy to help coordinate this event again and look forward to even more Selenes on the water near our home in ‘26.
